Bhubaneshwar, Odisha Travel Guide

Bhubaneshwar, Odisha Travel Guide:

Bhubaneswar history

Bhubaneshwar is the capital of eastern state of India Odisha. The Bhubaneswar area first appears in history during the 4th century BC. It has about 600 temples and hence it is known as Temple City of India. It is the gateway city to the holy Dham of Jagganath Puri, world famous Konark temple(Sun Temple) is also covered from here. Bhubaneswar is the largest city of Odisha and is known for its superb architectural and sculptural legacy. It is the center for financial and spiritual importance in the area. The fortified city of Sisupalgarh, 5 km northeast of Dhauli and 2.5 km southeast of Bhubaneswar was the site of Kalinga Nagar, the Capital of the Chedi (Mahameghavahan) Kings. Excavations here revealed that this Fort had a well developed civil and military architecture. The archaeological remains at Dhauli, and hills of Udayagiri and Khandagiri give evidence of both Jain and Buddhist settlements around Bhubaneswar in the first two centuries BC. The waning of Buddhism and vanishing of Jainism with the growth of Saiva Pasupata Sect, the second century BC saw Brahmanism as the dominant religion underthe successive dynasties that ruled Odisha (Orissa)-the Shailodbhava and the Bhaumakaras in the 12-13th centuries. The temple building reached the zenith of its glory between 7th and 12th centuries when thousands of sandstone temples were erected around the Bindu Sagar, earning it the title ‘The city of Temples’. The period under the Gangas saw emergence of Vaishna-vism to prominence. Bhubaneswar was one of the earliest planned cities of India. It is one of the greenest and cleanest cities. In the year 1948 after India’s independence Cuttack was replaced by Bhubaneswar as the capital of Odisha. Mostly Cuttack and Bhubaneshwar are referred as the Twin Cities of Odisha. In recent years Bhubaneshwar has immerged as an upcoming IT hub of the region, also many metal processing units have made Bhubaneshwar a fast rising city of India.

The weather of bhubaneswar is moderate with temperatures ranging from 12 degrees in winter to about 45 degrees in summers. The average rainfall is about 150 cm in a year Bhubaneswar was basically designed to be a residential city to house government employees and thus had a few industrial houses except public sector enterprises. Due to liberalization of industrial sector by the Odisha government in 1990 the sudden upsurge in the development took place especially in IT sector. The real estate market is in boom these days. There is noteworthy growth in retail sector marketing too with lots of retail chain coming up in the city. Players like Reliance, Vishal Mega Mart, Big Bazaar, Pantaloon etc are already there, Good food brands like KFC, Dominnos, SubWay, McDonald etc is also there in Bhubaneswar. There is a tremendous growth in education sector also, especially there are many engineering colleges in the city. The city has many coaching classes like Akash Institute, Padhi Tutorials, Books Coaching etc.

Transportation in Bhubaneswar is organized with state road transport operating locally as well as intercity and interstate busses. Another player dream team transport also operates local busses. Taxis and auto rickshaws are also available. Bhubaneswar is connected by railways to other major cities of India. Biju pattanaik International Airport is the only International airport in Odisha, it is connected to many other cities of the India as well as abroad.
